Sourdough News + a Video!
We have two bits of great, sourdough-related news: the first is that our dear friends at Sidewalk Citizen have opened a new bakery in Calgary!
They were one of three businesses selected from hundreds of applicants to setup shop at the Simmons Building in Calgary. It’s a handsome old heritage building that fell into disrepair, and has since been restored by the city. Its new tenants are Sidewalk Citizen, Phil and Sebastian Coffee, and CHARBAR, CHARCUT’s new restaurant led by the talented Jessica Pelland, who was one of last year’s Roots, Rants, and Roars chefs.
In addition to their famous sourdough, the new Sidewalk Citizen has a daily spread of baked goods, and an ever-changing menu of savoury pastries, sandwiches, and pizza.
They’ve started making pita bread, which they stuff with things like “sprouted chickpea patties, yogurt, pickled red onion, mint & cucumber.” There are meat sandwiches with "braised chicken and duck, cherry-onion jam, mustard, and arugula," and veggie sandwiches like the "sea asparagus, Tallegio cheese, roasted green pepper, alfalfa sprouts, and sumac mayo." If I didn’t have other things to do, I would probably type out every menu item on their Instagram feed, which we are happy to report also includes a picture of Aviv wearing a shirt that says “I KNEAD TO BE HAPPY.”
The other bit of news is that our second video was released today on Good Food Jobs (an awesome website dedicated to helping people find meaningful work in the food industry) and it’s about Aviv, the Sourdough King himself! We interviewed him when we were on the road trip, then were forced to sit on the footage for awhile. Too much travel content to finish! Too many book proposals to write! Ok, there was just the one book proposal, but it took ages.
Anyways, better late than never, right? Here’s a three minute slice of Sidewalk Citizen life, and we’re hoping to get to Calgary asap to check out their shiny new space……
BONUS: Bet you didn't think we'd have a THIRD bit of sourdough-related news, but here it is: Aviv and the superhero Sidewalk Citizen team will have a recipe in our cookbook! Interested in seeing even more? Check out our original post about the bakery.
